Finland is all about forest, lakes and reindeers. Or at least this is what it looks like at the first glance. I came to Finland a bit tired. I was travelling with Mia for quite some time and collected so many experiences that I just wanted to stop for a moment and place everything in the right spot in my mind. I stopped at a nice spot over a lake with extremely beautiful sunset. It got a bit cold, so I’ve decided to turn on a heating and it turned out that it’s broken. I started to figure out how to fix it and this is when I discovered that there’s a tiny leak just behind the heater, under a wardrobe. It was small but it kept leaking for quite some time, so you can imagine how it all looked. My kid was playing around like nothing was happening (she had no idea obviously) and I was sitting there and trying not to completely freak out and get into a bad mood.It was cold, wet and I was not happy. I wanted to sit and work a bit while drinking a hot tea. Instead, I put additional two blankets on our bed and I fell asleep with Mia.

Sometimes small things (because it’s not a biggie when you live in a van) can grow a bit too much and make you feel very unhappy. That’s why I’ve decided not to let it happen and to have a break. When I say break, I mean something super awesome, like hanging out with two beautiful souls in a wooden hut over a lake. If you have friends in Finland it’s highly possible (this is what I was told) that they have a cabin in the woods.

We met with Sini and Jonna in a place with the best donuts in Finland (is there a better place for a meeting?) and straight after we did some food shopping. It was the first relief – I did not have to think about each detail and plan each meal. The girls did it all. I was happily pushing a stroller behind them. Then we got to a little wooden house where we were about to spend a couple of days together. Surrounded by berries and mushrooms, Justin front of a lake… It was a dream come true.

I don’t have to tell you that I did talk a lot, it’s nice to have a proper conversation from time to time with someone older than 2 years old. It seemed like they didn’t mind and I was very grateful. I did get a bit wild during my alone time with Mia. We ate, we drank good wine and we talked some more.

It turned out that I did not know much about Finnish cabins, but now I do. There’s usually no running water. You do not have a shower, but you will have a sauna! How cool is this! At Sini’s we had blueberries growing around, which we collected for a breakfast. Apparently you stay there only for the warmer months, but I instantly imagined living there a whole year.

Mia needed this break as well, I could see how happy she was and it made me more relaxed.

We had a deer stew on beer, which was extremely delicious. I also had a chance to see how you make Korvapuusti aka finish cinnamon rolls. Sini is a specialist, as she did so many in her life. There is one thing you need to remember, it’s essential to eat them accompanied by a glass of milk. It does make a huge difference, I’m telling you!

Check out the recipe at Sini’s blog, she also made pictures step by steps it’s easier to follow.

Enjoy, Marta
